The ‘Project plan Images for the Future’, written in 2006, forms the foundation of the project. Driving it was the serious decay of archival institutions’ audiovisual collections, as well as their limited accessibility and search functions. Behind the plan stand six parties that have joined forces in the Images for the Future Consortium.
The project plan offers a window view of the opportunities offered by digitized content. The Foundation for Economic Research (SEO) has further investigated these opportunities in an ‘area code prefix costs and benefits analysis’ (see Costs and Benefits). Central in devising the project plan was providing the broadest possible access of the audiovisual content to everyone. The plan also presents the project’s end products. The most important activities in the areas of preservation, digitization, intellectual property rights, distributional infrastructure, search structures, and public functions have been further clarified. In addition, detailed information can be found about the project’s contribution towards renewing heritage institutions and strengthening the knowledge economy. Its closing piece is the investment and financial plan.
